About the WBU

The World Broadcasting Unions (WBU) is the coordinating body for broadcasting unions who represent broadcaster networks across the globe. It was established in 1992 as a coordinating body at the international broadcasting level. Since then, the WBU has provided global solutions on key issues for its member unions. The North American Broadcasters Association (NABA) acts as secretariat for the WBU.

The broadcasting unions who belong to the WBU are the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU), the Arab States Broadcasting Union (ASBU), the African Union of Broadcasting (AUB), the Caribbean Broadcasting Union (CBU), the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), the International Association of Broadcasting (IAB/AIR), the North American Broadcasters Association (NABA) and the Organizacion de Telecomunicaciones Iberoamericanas (OTI).

The WBU currently has four working committees: the International Satellite Operations Group (WBU-ISOG), the Technical Committee (WBU-TC), the Sports Committee (WBU-SC) and the WBU-WIPO Broadcaster Treaty Group (WBU-WIPO).

  • World Electronic Media Forum (WEMF)
The WBU was a proud organizing partner of the World Electronic Media Forum 4 (WEMF4), hosted by Organizacion de Telecomunicaciones Iberoamericanas (OTI) - a member of the World Broadcasting Unions (WBU) - in Mexico City on November 11-13, 2009.

The World Electronic Media Forums are an initiative of the WBU that started with WEMF1 in Geneva in 2003, followed by WEMF2 in Tunis in 2005 and WEMF3 in Kuala Lumpur in 2007.

The first two WEMFs were held as side events of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS), after which they were spun off to become a biannual event providing an opportunity for broadcast executives, journalists, academics, visionaries and decision makers from around the world and discuss the changes that are taking place in the global information society and the role of the electronic media in the dissemination of knowledge, business engagement and other aspects of society.

  • International News Safety Institute (INSI)
The International News Safety Institute (INSI) is a unique coalition of news organisations, journalist support groups and individuals exclusively dedicated to the safety of news media staff working in dangerous environments. It is a non-profit charity supported entirely by membership contributions which are channeled back into safety work on behalf of thousands of journalists around the world whose lives are at risk covering the news.

For journalists in or planning to visit danger zones, and for their assignment editors, INSI runs an informational website at www.newssafety.com.

INSI has developed a list of questions to raise awareness on the Safety of Journalists Resolution adopted by the UN Security Council. These questions were developed for the UK, but members of sister unions can use these as a template to develop questions for their respective national governments, either directly or through their parliamentary contacts. These questions are an excellent way to begin or further dialog with responsible parties on the topic of journalists' safety.
